Unusual Rare Glass Gem Corn (13 pics)

Beautiful Rare Glass Gem Corn — Can a vegetable be considered a work of art? An unusual, and uncommon, strain of corn known as Glass Gem corn is here to make the case. Much like actual glass blowing, each cob of Glass Gem corn is a unique creation. Some kernels pink, some orange, others a brilliant lime green. If we told you it was a beautiful piece of corn rainbow jewelry, you’d probably believe it. In fact, it’s a completely edible ear of corn originating from some special seeds you’ll soon be able to order and plant yourself.

It comes from 'seedsman' Greg Schoen of the family-owned Seeds Trust, who got the seed from Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee man, how in his 80s, in Oklahoma. He was known as a wizard of corn breeding, and spent years hand selecting seeds from the most vibrant and colorful corns he grew. Barnes eventually passed on his creation to fellow seed cultivators, and word quickly spread of the incredible cobs. It is unknown how many generations Barnes sifted through to create the jewels we see today. But the results speak for themselves.
