Scala dei Turchi - The White Limestone Cliff (17 pics)

PhotoCredit:
Scala dei Turchi - The White Limestone Cliff — The Scala dei Turchi (Italian for “Stairs of the Turks”) is a brilliantly white limestone cliff, sculpted like a staircase, on the coast of Realmonte, near Porto Empedocle, southern Sicily, Italy. The Scala is formed by marl, a sedimentary rock with a characteristic white color. The name translates as Turkish Steps, and indeed there is a striking resemblance to Pamukkale, Turkey. However the history of the name is that the Scala dei Turchi was the place Arab pirates, locally referred to as 'turks', anchored their boats out of the wind while they pillaged the surrounding area unless beaten by winds and representing a safer landing. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction due to its unusual white color.

Unbelievable Colorful Rock Formations in China (11 pics)

Unbelievable Colorful Rock Formations in China — We are living in times when Photoshop is capable of practically anything, but this time it has nothing to do with this article! Zhangye Danxia Landform in China is just one of those places that are hard to believe really exist. Located in Gansu province, a naturally formed landscape astonishes its visitors with the burst of colors – its streaks of yellow, orange and red to emerald, green and blue make it hard to believe it’s all real. The vast area of intensely colored valleys, waterfalls and natural pillars looks surreal in the pictures, reminding more of a impressionistic painting than a photograph.
