The Longest Outdoor Escalator System in the World — Hong Kong Island is hilly, which makes walking from one street to the next difficult, if you're going uphill. Driving is not an option as owning a private car is very costly in Hong Kong. Taking the bus is silly as you really just want to go up a few streets to buy some rice or grocery. Waiting for the bus to come and to zigzag up the hill would take probably an hour. The government in the early 1990s built an extensive network of outdoor escalators near Hollywood Road in Central and smartest residential area called Mid levels to provide pedestrian access up and down the steep slope. The Mid Levels escalators run between Des Voeux Road in Central with Conduit Road in the district and are the longest series of outdoor covered escalators in the world, running for 800 meters.

There are a total of 20 escalators and 3 moving walkways, connected in
places by footbridges and with 14 entrances and exits running all over
the district of Soho, which is a very fashionable district with many
bars, cafe and restaurants. The escalators are free of charge and run
downhill between 6am and 10am and uphill from 10:30am to midnight.
